I just received an anonymous message condemning me for my use of a secular song in a worship service. This message reminded me why I do what I do and why the projects that I am a part of exist.
I believe that as christians we should be finding Jesus in the world and the art around us instead of creating our own genres of music.
We used a song by Taylor Swift this sunday in our worship service as a response to the message that was given. The lyrics to this song spoke so deeply to the change we should be making in our lives. Also this song was artistically put together much more than any christian song I could find. The people in our service don’t listen to K LOVE in their free time and not because they don’t love Jesus. It’s because they prefer a different STYLE of music than KLOVE can offer. I’m gonna come right out and say it, for the most part, in my opinion as a musician, “secular” music is much more artistic, innovative, professional, and relatable than any of its “christian” counterparts. That’s why people listen to it.
As christians I encourage you to find Jesus in the world around you. Be immersed in the culture and help to change it. Don’t climb into your christian bubble and hide from the world.
The end of this message I received said WWJD. The bible very clearly says that Jesus didn’t hang out in church. He hung out with sinners, he went to parties and turned water into wine, he ate dinner at tax collectors houses, and he had conversations with the outcasts of society. I believe that Jesus would be all about engaging culture around us because that is what he did.
I love this. While I do listen to KLOVE quite frequently when i’m in the car, I also listen to secular music as well. I love what he says about this.

Tim and I got to talk tonight for about thirty minutes and it was so great. We decided that we’re going start going through books of the Bible together, write about it during the week, and discuss it on Saturdays. We’re beginning with 1 Corinthians tomorrow, dissecting it little by little. I’m just really excited that we’re doing something like this together. I can’t wait to see how we’re going to grow this summer.
They’re finishing up their sixth album, in the fall they will begin their final tour, and that’s it. They’re done. It kind of makes me really want to go see their show in the fall even more…

want this.
as many of you know, today is the first day of lent, otherwise known as Ash Wednesday. i’ve never really seriously gave anything up for the lenten season. this year i’m putting an end to that. i’ve been raised up as a nondenominational christian, and although lent is typically observed by more denominational christians, i have always been taught about it and have known many, many people and have been involved with churches that partake in lent. i always say that i’m going to give up something, like sodas or sugar, but i always end up caving after just a few days.
i’m a junior in high school at a private christian school, for the first time ever. up until this year, i’ve attended public school. my english teacher, this year, told us that if we seriously gave something up for lent, journaled about it everyday, and wrote a paper at the end of it, he would give us an extra 100 as a test grade. we discussed lent in great detail during monday’s and tuesday’s class to grasp the true meaning of it.
i’ve decided that i’m going to give up facebook. i’m on facebook pretty much every free second of my life. it’s actually a little unhealthy. here is where i’m going to be ‘journaling’ about my experience and just what’s going on with me.
i don’t really expect anyone to read this, but if you do, that’s pretty cool. please feel free to comment. i’d love that.
